245 Ixodes tick species are found worldwide, the most prevalent species in Europe are I. ricinus (castor bean tick), I.canisuga (British dog tick), and I. trianguliceps (vole tick) (although I. hexagonus, I. acuminatus, I. apronophorus, I. ventalloi, I. frontalis, I. hexagonus, I. arboricola, I. lividus, I. uriae, I. unicavatus, I. caledonicus and I. rotschildi have also been recorded in western Europe)
